why the military regime fear the student leaders of 88 generation
_ by Feraya Min Ko Naing and his fellow Student Leaders pose a great threat to the regime because they command a lot of respect from the opposition parties, the citizens of Burma and even the army. The Student Leaders, Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi, Htay Kywe, Min Zeya and Pyone Cho have the ability to represent the people of Burma, and to express their needs. They can put into words the national collective consciousness. Their words carry weight to the ears of the citizens of Burma as well as the international communities worldwide. The Student Leaders have faith in ethical values. They are men who are good, or try to be good, and they do not love and struggle for their countrymen and women in vain. They have faith in ethical values which preserves ethical capital and thereby justifies the faith of all the people who contribute to it. The citizens of Burma and the world communities have faith in the Student Leaders and when they say something needs to be done they will do what needs to be done. If the Student Leaders of the 88 Generation say “The time is right for an uprising”, the citizens of Burma will take their words to their hearts and will not hesitate to carry out an uprising. This is what the regime greatly fears. We need only to look back at the1988 uprising to know how capable, determined and courageous the student leaders were to lead the whole country into an uprising. With international pressure building up, something has to be done. Change can only come about when the people inside Burma do something to make it happen, taking the responsibility for change and the Student Leaders play an active and important role in all that. They are the voice of the people, and they are catalysts for change and to make things happen. The 88 Generation Student leaders have come a long way since the 8888 Uprising. They might have started off as, outraged, passionate and rebellious student leaders but they are a lot more mature, wiser and pragmatic now. They have survived their long sentences and they know exactly what they are doing and what needs to be done. On Wednesday 18th October Min Ko Naing will be 44 years old. Last year, he appealed for International Aid for the desperate humanitarian crises in Burma. The Student Leaders have first hand knowledge of the terrible situation in Burma and they are the ones who care enough for the Burma citizens to lead them to freedom and democracy. The generals arrested the Student Leaders because they are under increasing pressure from the world community to make changes – something they don’t want to do. They know that the Student Leaders have the ability to mobilize and galvanize the public in Burma to build internal pressure on the regime. By themselves, the Student Leaders are just individuals, but they act as a catalyst for change. We should do everything we can to support the petition to release the Student Leaders and all political prisoners in Burma. When the junta is under pressure from outside and inside, they will be squeezed out. (Please sign the petition “We Want our Student Leaders Released Immediately”)
