Protests in Australia
Friday, 12pm at Hyde Park North in Sydney: It was a very interesting event. Activists marched across to the Korean Consulate at 111 Elizabeth St and demanded that Daewoo stop funding the Shwe Gas Project and propping up the regime. They also raised awareness that Howard and Downer’s support for ‘anti-terrorism’ training for Burmese military is unacceptable. The event was also attended by Dr Thann Naing, Chair of the Burmese Community Welfare Group, Peter Murphy (Search Foundation), as well as LHMU NSW, CFMEU, and other union activists and community supporters. Not least of course is the Burmese community’s strong support, including the Arakan community, where the Daewoo gas project will cause the most destruction.
