EU Should Not Be Lenient On Military Dictators

The pro-democracy and human rights campaign group “Democracy for Burma”, with many hundreds of keen activists around the world, has sent an appeal to the European Union Council of Ministers this week.

The appeal is concerned with EU’s recent softened stance on the notorious military regime of Burma. In their appeal, the campaign group asked the EU council of Ministers not to relax the existing travel ban on high-ranking Burmese military Generals, but to strengthen the EU’s economic and business sanctions on Burma’s oppressive military junta.

An Appeal to the European Union Council of Ministers

................noted with deep concern that the European Union is considering a relaxation of the existing travel ban on the notorious military regime of Burma to allow Burmese military regime officials to attend the various ASEM/ARF meetings in Europe in 2006

There have been reports that the European Union is trying to increase engagements with the military regime of Burma, with a wishful thinking that this oppressive regime may be engaged and persuaded to make democratic reforms...............

................So, we here make an appeal to the European Union Council of Ministers that _

  1. no relaxation of the visa ban for the Burmese military regime officials to attend the ARF and ASEM meetings in Europe,
  2. the EU Common Position on Burma be strengthened, especially sanctions on oil and gas, forest and mining products, and fisheries and garments,
  3. EU would commend the UN Security Council to make a formal discussion on the atrocities and crimes against humanity committed by the military regime, and also to make a binding UN resolution to take tough actions on Burmese military regime immediately.

Excerpts of Some Comments

_ I completely agree with your stand.

Comment by Roger Moody — February 18, 2006

_ If these SPDC thugs are allowed entry visa, it will be another gain for brutal regime of their legitimacy in the international arena.

Comment by Jan Tun Aung — February 18, 2006

_ Undoubtedly, EU decision not to grant visas to the SPDA members is a step in positive direction. It is definitely a success by its democracy movement leaders for the people of Burma.

Comment by Dr. Abid Bahar — February 20, 2006

_ If the EU wishes to exert pressure on ASEAN policy and the Burmese government, why not make more realistic demands, such as the resumption of the constitutional convention?
