Corrupt Staffs of Military Government
I would like to say the correct word is “the corrupt government staff” Yes, I had this experience even at Yangon Intl’ Airport until now. The police (security) and Immigration are extremely hunting money from the passengers. That’s a shame for our country indeed, nowadays even in Africa (like Nigeria) there is less corruption than our country Myanmar. The main thing is, why the government did not fire these type of corrupted persons. Once I was p---ed off completely at Yangon airport where I took an out bound flight to Bangkok. When I arrived in Yangon airport, I claimed at custom desk how much money I had brought into Burma. And on the day I left, I returned this claimed paper to custom and passed the x-ray security check. Custom was OK, nothing was wrong. But the police men (Lutenient and lady police woman) asked me to open my wallet. It’s OK; I opened it and replied them as I already claimed in my custom paper. But when police men saw my money inside my wallet, they started asking me that where are you going, where did you get these money from ? And etc…. These policemen were really intending to extort me of my money. Finally, they could not cheat me anything because I was everything in legal way. They ask me to give money for their breakfast. I was not surprised with this situation, I gave 10 US $ for them… that was a real story. I don’t know exactly if these police men have the authority to take the money from my wallet by shameful way… ( I don’t think so but it happened on Jan 19th 2006 before boarding a TG flight ) This is a really shameful story for SPDC military regime. Even now after SPDC having increased their salary wouldn’t do much to punish this kind of corrupted people. “As corruption becomes a tradition everywhere” this situation is very difficult to deal with. Only if you have a “ big relative” (related to a very high ranking general), these kind of corrupted people will be scared of you. Yes, I agree what is said in previous issue of Burma Digest. Many countries have been corrupted, but they are not corrupt in all sectors. But in Myanmar we can see corruption everywhere_ all of Government offices which issue licenses, permits for export-import, and even in hospital for birth certificates and etc…. I have been kept on paying income tax since 1988 ( now over 18 Yrs ) but I never got the import car permit. Of course corrupt officials control car-permits_ especially in selling/buying cars and to change ownership registration at “Revenue Office”. The person, whose name I’ve forgotten but he is still in this service, gave trouble to many people who were honest, he just did his job for bribery. He got this job in this position because he is an ex-army office who was transferred from armed-forces because of hepatitis B Disease. (Hepatitis B positive officers are usually transferred from armed forces to civil service) The worst persons are police men at Yangon airport, immigration officers, traffic police with patrol cars, immigration department for Departure form, Export/ Import license officers and etc…. The most corrupted department is Yangon City Development Committee. However, SPDC must take serious actions as soon as possible. SPDC Ministers have to take investigations regularly and randomly without warning to these corrupt officers (surprise checks). I believe one day, we can wipe out this kind of corrupted people. Comments Maha Pyinyagyaw said _ Understandable for the agony you went through.Civil servants are forced to drink bitter rain water. The main culprits are the ruling clique.Officers you mentioned are like jackals vying for the remaining money left in the fields.
