TO ALL FREEDOM WRITERS: A CALL TO ACTION!
by David Law, MD Burma Freedom Writer
Although I have no rifle near I am a Freedom Fighter; With pen and paper, word processor, I'm a Freedom Fighter! Tragic events I write and draw About my Burmaland, My name is David Pe Aung Law, An unknown novice hand.
The streets of Rangoon, my home city, Are plagued by SLORCist rats; They've caused the death and misery Of countless Democrats. Unarmed innocent civilians Attacked by SLORCist dogs; Lifeless bodies of their victims Clog the city morgues.
The threat of genocide's at hand For all ethnicities; Water dams will flood their lands, Gone are all their trees; The threat of slavery's at hand; The Army catches porters. SLORC has sold the nation.....and Imprisoned Aung San's daughter.
They have all the tanks and guns With huge Chinese supports. Dollars by the millions, Stashed in Swiss bank vaults. The people crushed, harassed to death, By ruthless MI men; A misery of hell-on-earth That never will quite end.
How can we defeat and win Against this evil slime? All we have are donations, And volunteers, parttime. Let us write and make a stand Across the news media, To corporations, embassies and Officers, leaders.
It's a long and difficult road, Let's keep it up with zwair (perseverance) Let us work and pray with hope, Don't give in to despair. When you write to help dear Burma, You are Freedom Writers. With pen and paper, word processors, You're also Freedom Fighters. (by D. Law, Chicago med student, 1994)
The above is an old poem I wrote during my student days. Now, I came up with the following thoughts and ideas. 1. Global Publicity is our weapon. In fact, it may well turn out to be our only significant weapon inside as well as outside country since politicking inside Burma, armed uprisings, civil demonstrations, and freedom of speech is impossible there. 2. The better our writings are, the more quoted we will be, and the more effective weapon it will become in the Liberation of Burma. 3. But, be aware that having your name publicized in an anti-SPDC e-zine (and being requoted many times over in other e-zines) is not, at this present time, a good thing. It may be hazardous to your health if one day SPDC decides to send out hit teams, either to harm you via the internet or actual assassins. Already, the enemy has attacked us Freedom Writers with viruses and misused our email addresses to send more viruses in our names. But don't let this risk of cyber or physical harm hinder your patriotic, humanistic aspirations. Like Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said, "Don't let fear prevent you from doing what you should do." "Use your freedom to help ours." Most people in Burma do not have access to computers and the few who do are severely limited in their freedom to use computers. Therefore, to all of us outside Burma, it behooves you to use your writing skills to contribute to pro-democracy media campaigns. Ayaydawboan Aung Yah Myi! (Our) Cause Must Succeed!
