Global Day of Action to Stop Atrocities on Ethnic People in Burma

We need your help, and we need it now!

We need your help, and we need it now. We are calling for an emergency, global day of action on Tuesday, May 16th to demand that the UN Security Council stop the violence in eastern Burma. We call on everyone who believes in human rights to organize protests in front of Burmese embassies around the world, and if you live in a city where there is no Burmese embassy, to organize a demonstration in front of your national parliament or any federal buildings. Please, whatever you are doing on May 16th, drop it to demand an end to the destruction of innocent lives in Eastern Burma.

Because of the ongoing attacks by the Burmese military regime against Karen civilians in the Eastern part of Burma, over 13,000 people have been forced to flee from their homes at gunpoint. Several bodies have been found which have been severely mutilated and beheaded. A nine year-old girl was shot, after seeing her father and grandmother killed.

More than 2,000 have fled to the Thai border where they are living under plastic sheets in a temporary camp. But thousands more are being hunted in the jungle as wild animals, without basic food, medicine or shelter.

Since the Burmese Junta moved their capital to Pyinmana, the Burma Army have been extensively pushing innocent villagers into forced relocation camps, turning villages into 'free-fire' zones, kidnapping people for forced labour, burning and stealing food stocks, shooting and killing indiscriminately, raping, torturing, and laying landmines.

Shockingly, the United Nations Security Council has been silent on these attacks. It is time for the UN Security Council to take action to stop the violence.

There will be a global day of action on May 16th to stop the violence in Burma, especially in the western and northern part of the Karen State, and demand UN Security Council action.
Demonstrations will take place outside Burmese embassies in many countries around the world.

In the UK, the UK-Karen Community Association, along with other ethnic groups, will be holding a demonstration in cooperation with Christian Solidarity Worldwide and the Burma Campaign UK outside the Burmese Embassy at 19A Charles Street, Berkeley Square, London W1J 5DX. Ruth Rogers, one of the most gifted young violinists in Britain (Musical Opinion), will be joining the demonstration in the support of Human Rights and Democracy in Burma. Speeches will be given by a number of high profile people including British MPs. There will be photos opportunities with Karen traditional costumes.

And, a request, addressed to SPDC regime, to stop killings of ethnic people in Burma will be delivered to SPDC embassy.

In Washington DC, a demonstration organized by US campaign for Burma will be held on May 16th at 5:00 pm in front of the Burmese embassy at 2300 St, NW.

Please join in the this global day of action to help stop human rights violation in Burma and call for United Nations Security Council to intervene Burma urgently.

I was once talking to a fellow Burmese who does not have interest in politics.   He was dismissing the Karen as "just some tribe," i.e., some backward people of no consequence.
Recently, I had a chance to talk to a retired Burmese economics lecturer. She clearly disapproved the idiotic shenanigans of the SPDC even though she was not a revolutionary. She, too, was not interested in politics apart from being unhappy with the current economic situation. I was struck by her comment when we were talking about a news report on KNLA fighting against the SPDC.  "Oh, these people, they are rebels, they keep fighting the government."  She said this in a disparaging manner.
It is a really tragic that some of our fellow Burmese still regard the Karen and other Ethnic People as (persons of no consequence)  and that they regard Freedom Fighters as mere rebels, troublesome rebels.
What we need to do is to change the minds of such negative people, that the life and livelihood of every Ethnic Member matters, and that the so-called rebels are really Freedom Fighters.
Let me wish you success for the planned Global Day of Action.

U Khin Maung, Arakan national Congress, said _

All ethnic groups in Burma shall be united and coordinate with each other in their struggle to freedom, democracy & justice.

Keisha Davis (concerned American) said _

I hope the KNLA keeps fighting for their freedom, and against the Burmese military junta. God Bless those brave spirits.
