Enough is Enough

_ by Terry Evans

Over the last 18 years, a lot of energy has gone into a thousand explanations of why the junta is so aggressive, brutal and insensitive. The fact remains that, for over four decades, the generals have engaged in the insane destruction of Burma. Today’s rulers have returned Burma to the dark days of Ne Win’s gangster politics, fuelled by personal hatred and violence. Once again, sadists are at the very top of the military ranks and, like Ne Win, they take pleasure in violence, sadism and other bullying activities.

Our struggle is not just about security; it is about values and modernity. It seems that if we are to win, we must not only win the battle of values but also the armed struggle. This is the challenge. Ranged against us are people who hate our values and us. Beyond them lies a nation ready to embrace our struggle for justice and fairness.

If we want to secure a free Burma, there is no alternative but to fight for it. It will be an enormous struggle to be free of the military’s legacy of oppression, stagnation and servitude, but we must hold firm to our goal. During 1988 the people of Burma staked a claim on democratic rights. In a courageous display of power, they declared that they wanted a society in which people of different cultures and faiths can live together in peace. The people of Burma once again need to be offered a choice to vote and, despite obstacles we can scarcely imagine, we must fight for this democratic right.

This struggle is our struggle. We must not hesitate in the face of a decisive battle that will determine whether our values triumph or fail. The fight is going to be tough, but it is not a time to walk away. Now is the time to dig deep, come together as a unified opposition and find the courage to renew the fight against the junta. It is no longer an option to stay in a safe place on the sidelines. We need to let the junta know that enough is enough.
