Dialogue Current Political Climate
Setkyar Heine … Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is still being held and kept incommunicado by Than Shwe to pre-empt further threats to his 'throne'. And the NLD leadership is perhaps, waiting for further orders from Daw Suu, if I am not wrong. Than Shwe is not giving Daw Suu another opportunity to open her mouth or make a move any more. Though the military thug may be dumb he is not stupid enough to let Daw Suu out again to nail his coffin! He let her meet some UN envoys, and even then at his own choice of venue, under surveillance and 'bugged' also. Today, Ban Ki Moon, the South Korean has taken the helm of the UN, Kofi Annan's place. Given the fact that South Korea has a lot of vested interests in Burma, our country's case at the UN will certainly take a back seat, if I am not wrong. So, who is going to help Daw Suu, Min Ko Naing and the people in Burma? Our pal in the WHITE HOUSE also is under siege and nearly sinking in his BLACK HOLE (IRAQ). And the UN is also, out of the question, as Ban Ki Moon is taking over the world body. And we guys, who made it good out of the maze on the Burma-Thailand borders also could not do anything substantial other than yelling our lungs and hearts out in front of the SPDC offices and representatives in foreign lands and calling for UN's effective intervention, but to no avail until today. Time is flying comrade, as they say 'TIME AND TIDE WAIT FOR NO MAN”. We are putting our time and energy and doing our best to get that message into the midst of the people of Burma all these years and using all avenues and tactics at our disposal. Daw Suu has also hinted that point to the people in her numerous speeches given when she was free. Politics is more or less a game only, where either you WIN or LOSE. In fact, one thing it is different from a game like in betting there is no 'draw' or 'even'. The WINNER TAKES ALL in politics, or the LOSER GIVES ALL. If you are a true REVOLUTIONARY OR POLITICIAN both ends mean NOTHING to you except the fact that truth matters and counts also; and the joy of doing something true and right specifically for your fellow beings at large is the PRIZE, nothing more or less. Beyond that nothing matters. Life is only a struggle and if you struggle for your fellow beings, then you are a SAINT. Of course, the people of Burma are in dire need of outside help in terms of their health and other social ills including politics prevailing in the country today. And the SPDC is doing everything to derail international bodies giving help in the country and forthcoming from abroad. This is very heinous of the evil regime in Burma. This evidences the attitude of the ruling generals lacking in compassion and sympathy for the people of Burma, and specifically, their aim of imperilling and subjecting the people to poverty and destitute, and deprive the people of their time and energy to question their motives and actions, in their course of enslaving and subjugating them to eternity.
Dr Sein Myint replied ... I could not agree more with you of your analysis on current political climate both of Burma and the US. And today, we have news that China and Russia had vetoed on the US resolution (even the watered down version) at the UNSC; some says it as rare double veto in such matter. However, to my surprise South Africa has vetoed against the resolution on Burma, which is the most damming affect at least to my opinion. As you know, one of the two Noble Laureates that had primarily proposed for the UNSC resolution last year was South African Bishop Desmond Tutu, an ardent supporter of Human Rights and personal friend of Daw Suu. What was clearly demonstrated by the South African was that the political decisions at highest levels could be taken with total absent of democratic spirits but rather more in line with commercial and strategic interests. And we are clearly witnessing the replay of old Cold War scenario, where the US and West on one side, China and Russia on the other, while Japan, Australia and ASEAN sitting on the fence cheering aloud of constructive engagement and democracy, and Burma is the playing field. One thing that we have come to realize is that after 18 years of struggle, people comes to know who is doing what, what they can do, and how much had been done during these years. There is no question or doubt on the parts of people such as Daw Suu, U Tin Oo, Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi, and many others inside the country, of their sacrifice and efforts to get democracy in Burma. They are still very much committed to this noble cause, and will not deviate from the path. The facts are very clear for every one to see. There is no unity among Burmese democrats, and no trust between the ethnics and Burmese in general. And every body wants to be the LEADER, so many generals no soldiers! WE must first UNITE ourselves, and then elects LEADERS those who have capacity, trust worthiness, and commitments for the cause. And it should be a collective leadership. .
