The World’s Morality Is an Issue
_ By Hkun Hom Why is United Nations dysfunctional on such an important issue affecting the lives of fifty million people of the world’s community? The answer is not very difficult. I think one can say UN is somehow under the spell of corruption, because two of its veto wielding-powers were blatantly abusing their rights. The reasons they used them in justifying their actions on Burma’s UNSC resolution was incorrect. That is, it was based on the pretext that violation of human rights in Burma is not causing a regional destabilization or causing an imminent outbreak of world war. And yet no one can argue against the existence or the reality of the plight of fifty million Burmese people. Therefore the failure of UN in resolving Burma’s crisis is due to a very big loophole. It is the criteria by which the veto power should and could be applied. This criteria needs to be redefined. It stresses the urgent need for UN to be reformed as was echoed by many nations not long ago. Its foundation stone is shaky, on which it pledges to serve for the good cause of humanity. The reform is inevitable to take it to higher level of human, moral and ethical principles. In this instance, there is absolutely no doubt, the two powers China & Russia have compromised their moral principles for their vested interests in total disregard to the ongoing sufferings of humanity. In a nutshell, their actions at the UNSC on Burma’s resolution must be condemned as irresponsible. UN must be rid of the prevailing corrupt systems for a better world for all human beings to live in, irrespective of whether they are poor or rich, creed and color as truly spelled out by the universal declarations of human rights.
