Protest against India

Global Action Day against Shwe Gas Project

Date:   26th March 2007 Monday

There will be a Global Action Day against Shwe Gas Project in Burma.

Burmese democracy activists and their supporters in about 20 countries around the world will stand up for human rights and environmental protection by protesting against the Shwe Gas Project in Burma, targeting the Indian Government for their investments in the project and military support to the brutal Burmese regime.

Please come and join the global action day against Shwe Gas project.

Brief information on India-Burma relation

Over the past ten years, India has become one of Burma’s economic and military partners where the country is charged by the United Nations with a “Crime against humanity”. India is now cooperating closely with the Burmese regime in politics, trade, investment and military affair.

In cooperation with India and Korea, the Burmese military regime is exploring Shwe gas fields off the coast of Arakan State in Western Burma. These Shwe fields are expected to hold one of the largest gas yields in Southeast Asia. It’s estimated to begin the pipeline construction in 2007 and destined to become the Burmese military regime's largest single source of earnings. The gas would provide, on average, US$580 million per year for the Burmese regime for twenty years, or US$ 12 billion.

Such investments are likely to be used to increase the army, to have more control over ethnic nationalities and destroy villages as Burmese regime’s policy of ethnic cleansing. In the past experience with the Yadana and Yetagun pipelines, infrastructure development projects in Burma are identical with militarization and human rights violations. More army simply means more killing, more raping and more torturing.

The Indian government should reconsider their policy and their economic and military cooperation with Burmese brutal regime. India should also know that military regime will not be in power for long and there will be civilian’s government one day and the power will return to the people.
