88 Years History of Burmese Students' Movement

Chiang Mai, Thailand (13 March, 2007) – 88 Years History of Burmese Students' Movement (Hardcover) by Aung Tun, the first book published presenting a historical account of the student movement in Burma, has been scheduled for release in early April.  The title tells of   "88 years", but this book contains the drafts and writings of Aung Tun from 1903 to 1962 (59 years). The book contains the historical details of the RUSU constitution, the ABFSU constitutions, and information on the relationships between the groups with both inter- and intra- organizational documents in Burmese & English.  It also includes current updates on historically important student leaders and ethnic student leaders.

Although not conceived as an academic history, as it is written by student activist Aung Tun, the book serves as a valuable record of the spirit of the student movement.   In the book's foreword, he mentions that he has tried to capture the reflection of students in general during those eras.   The subjects of his history, the people, all 23 of them including himself, have been and are in prisons, some of them having met their end inside those 4 walls. His own journey saw 17 years in the gaol for his dedication and work.

Aung Tun was honoured with a Hellman/Hammett grant in 1999 and was made an honorary member of PEN Centres in Norway, Canberra, Australia and Canada respectively. He has dedicated the book to the students and youth of past and present Burma, to researchers and other people who are interested in Burmese affairs.
