Karen Rivers Watch Meeting with AIPMC

_ reported by Karen Rivers Watch

Karen Rivers Watch had a meeting with the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) during their visit to Thai-Burma border, 23-24 March,2007.

Karen Rivers Watch urged Thai's gorvernment to immediately stop its plans to dam the Salween River. The Wei Gyi, Dar Gwin and Hatgyi dams will have grave social and environmental impacts. Many villages and huge areas of arable lands and forests will be submerged. The environment will be critically impacted, including wildlife dependent on the jungles. Additionally, the project is bound to result in widespread forced relocation of villages, forced labor and human rights violations.

It is urgently needed for the international community and ASEAN countries to reevaluate their support for development programs currently being implemented by the regime in Burma. Without political reform and restoration of the basic rights of citizens, such programs will be exploited by the military rulers and will inflict further suffering on the peoples of Burma.
