English Language Section

I. "Risky Business"_ Editorial: Tai Samyone

_ The wealth to be made from business is reason enough to want to invest.  What will be important as the new civilian government comes to power is that the relationship with those companies will change – there can be no kid gloves when dealing with companies who have been prepared to ignore the fact that their investment is supporting a regime that kills and tortures its own people...........

II. "Invest at Your Own Risk"_ Candid Commentary: Dr. Tayza

_ however many contracts the foreign investors sign with the current regime in an unstable country, their contracts just become scrap-papers when the regime who signed the contracts is overthrown. And then there are some risks that the foreign investors will become much entangled in the wrong-doings and crimes against humanity committed by their business-partner regime.............

III. "Only the people of Burma can LIBERATE themselves"_ Candid Commentary: Sekkyar Hein

_  We should be well aware of the fact that UN or anybody on this earth can not help the people of Burma, other than themselves, to gain their freedom from SPDC in Burma today as long as China, and Russia amongst others like the ASEAN is colluding and standing tall for the SPDC..............

IV. "Questions on Further Studies Abroad" _ Answered by Aung Kyaw Soe

_ I am a student who is trying to go abroad. I have financial difficulty. I heard some private foundations can help me. What should I do for my financial need? Should I apply to "Prospect Burma"? I am afraid that it may be concerned with some sort of political affairs............

* 08.04.2007 issue "Olympism & Human Rights"

English Language Section

I. "Olympic Spirit"_ Editorial: Tai Samyone

_ The opening clauses of the Olympic Charter give us a clue about the ethos that the games organisers espouse, and very worthy they are too.  Unfortunately, too many countries fall far short of these principles.  Sportsmen and women around the world seek to promote this spirit and often believe that participation in the Olympic Games can have a good impact on host nations that don’t match the ideals.  Boycott and alternative games have been held on many occasions............

II. "A MAD World"_ Candid Commentary: Dr. Tayza

_ The top number one mother of all madness is possessed by those self-acclaimed fanatical martyrs who blew up innocent children and pregnant women......Another very popular madness these days is the attempt to pile up all blames on the US and UK for any chaos and problems in Iraq.......Another currently trendy insanity is to blame American sanctions for all the poverties in Burma.......

III. "Ten Reasons to Boycott Olympic Games in Communist China"_ Opinion: Demetrius Klitou

_  Human rights are practically non-existent in Communist China. Religious persecution, imprisonment and murder of non-violent political dissidents, torture, organ harvesting and sentences to hard labour are widespread.............

IV. "Speaking with Human Rights Watch" _ Interview with David Mathieson, by Raluca Enescu

_ There are a range of serious human rights issues in Burma, with the most egregious being abuses against civilians in conflict areas, where extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, forced labour and widespread forced internal displacement are perpetrated with impunity by Burmese military............

V. "China's Un-Kept Promises"_ Letter to International Olympic Committee

_ Both past and present Olympic athletes, coaches and officials who have been made aware of and shown information regarding human rights transgressions in China are deeply concerned with China's un-kept promises. Today, stringent human rights violations happening daily in China are being ignored...........

VI. "From Europe to Little Burma"_ Travel Documentary: Anyar Thar Maung Walay

_ On the next day, we visited Maetao Clinic.......Staff on duty, men and women showed us around the hospital. We visited wards for children in-patients, adult in-patients, maternity ward, eye-test and eye department, bone and synthetic legs department, dispensary and out-patient department. At the synthetic legs prosthetic department, we saw a voluntary osteopath specialist from USA............

VII. "Freedom Net In Burma"_ Commentary: Ko Sala

_ The Burmese democracy movement has yet not come across a blogger from inside Burma who would bridge the information gap between Burma and outside world with information that cannot be acquired through open sources..........

VIII. "Revolt inside the USDA"_ Special Report: Border Office

_ There are news coming out of Burma that rank and file members of USDA, particularly in ethnic areas, are defying orders openly or indirectly......Not only in ethnic areas but also in Burma proper, majority of USDA members refused to wear their uniforms in public.........

IX. "Let’s Join USDA & Destroy it from Within" _ Satirical Opinion: Dr. San Oo Aung

_ I hope that our readers are already familiar with the concepts of the fifth column. It is a group of people which clandestinely undermines a larger group to which it is expected to be loyal.......The term originated from a 1936 radio address by Emilio Mola, a nationalist general, during the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War. As four of his army columns moved on Madrid, the general referred to his supporters within the capital as his "fifth column"..............

X. "Jordbur at a Wedding" _ Satire: JORDBUR

_ No more invitations of officials to weddings unless they are there to help us cook our meals, help us clean our messes after the wedding. We don’t need their blessing. It is time to show who the boss is and who is feeding whom.............

XI. "21st Century Compassion"_ Cartoon: Feraya

XII. "Human Rights Report on Burma"_ US State Department Report

_  Burma is ruled by an authoritarian military regime that enforced its firm grip on power with a pervasive security apparatus......U.S. human rights and democracy goals include the unconditional and immediate release of Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and more than 1,100 other political prisoners, an immediate end to military attacks on ethnic minorities, initiation of a credible and inclusive political process leading to national reconciliation, and unrestricted access for humanitarian assistance providers..........

XIII. "Protest Against Junta Rapists"_ Campaign Report: Kachin National Organization

_  On February 2nd 2007, two Rawang girls aged 16 were lured from San Lin Karaoke bar.  Two 14 year olds eight graders were picked up on the street at 6:00pm with the help of the sixteen year old.  Then, the minors were brutally raped at the military base in Mulashidi by three officers and four soldiers...............

XIV. "Its media, but not as we know it"_ BURMA DIGEST Extra: Dr Bhaskar Dasgupta

_  So many times we have heard about how people are turning away from traditional media and the requiem for the traditional radio, TV and newspapers has been written many times. So is the death of traditional media vastly exaggerated? No, I am afraid not...............

* 15.04.2007 issue  "Will BURMESE NEWYEAR BRING RECONCILIATIONS?"

English Language Section

I. "Reconciliation and Negotiation: Is it possible with the SPDC?"_ Editorial: Tai Samyone

_ Does the SPDC’s process of transition in the ‘National Convention’ show any signs that the regime are willing to negotiate?  Anyone who criticizes the process can be thrown in jail because of laws passed specifically aimed at suppressing dissent.  The political parties who value their integrity and are prepared to stand up and be counted have openly criticized the NC and withdrawn from the absurd proceedings.............

II. "Hoping for a National Reconciliation"_ Commentary: Dr San Oo Aung

_ Myanmar/Burma Military Junta’s stubborn pride still stands in the way of common sense and dignity. They ignore the meaningful dialogue, and they don’t have a desire to start a reconciliatory move. They just try to buy time by fooling the whole population of Myanmar and the world...........

III. "Free Burma, Free Sudan"_ Commentary: Min Khin Kyaw

_  Whilst the Chinese leaders try to secure the stable growth of China with a vision of making China a superpower, they must not ignore the persistence downfall of the people of Burma (and many other countries) caused by their actions. In fact, Burmese are not alone suffering from the effect of Chinese policy of self-centred economy. The people of Sudan, who are suffering from bad Chinese influences in their country, have also asked China to stop selfish economic policies..............

IV. "Rebuttal to HRW Interview" _ Critique: Derek Tonkin

_ The exchanges in "Burma Digest" are too carefully formulated.....I would however stress that I have the greatest respect for Human Rights Watch and that on the essential, factual analysis of what David has to say, I do not disagree with him. But his interpretations invite controversy.........

V. "Inflation and Shrinking Myanmar Kyat"_ Analysis: AKS

_ In every country, consumer prices index normally reflects the degree of inflation. Inflation shrinks the purchasing power of the currency and is undesirable for a nation......It could be seen that the retail prices of groceries have risen by average of 50%. The household appliances prices by about 30%, and automobile prices by 150%. The purchasing power of Kyat becomes much smaller in Mar 07 compared June 04...........

VI. "For the 777 DAY of Civil Disobedience"_ Opinion: Shwe Ba

_ SPDC is going to new General Elections according to their road map. We cannot let SPDC force all the people of Burma to rubberstamp or just approve what they want. We cannot simply let them legalize their ultimate aim of “Permanent dominance of the Military” disguised or sugar coated  as a form of disciplined democracy............

VII. "Ali Baba and forty thieves"_ Satire: Maha Bandula

_ Al-Sahaf is probably most known for his daily press briefings in Baghdad during the 2003 Iraq War; Kyaw San is probably most known for his frequent  press briefings  or lies in Yangon and Nwa Pyidaw ..........

VIII. "Junta's Divide & Rule Policy"_ Cartoon: Feraya

IX. "Calling New Students for THREE Faculties of 2008 Semester" _ Special Report: AEIOU Program

* 22.04.2007 issue "Non Violent Struggles"

English Language Section

I. "Burma's non-violent struggle"_ Editorial: Tai Samyone

_ So far, the non-violent struggle has not worked in bringing an end to the regime and the realisation of the dream of freedom and democracy to Burma.  But neither has the armed struggle.  With many armed groups having made ceasefire agreements and the remaining armed groups operating on the borderlands, the non-violent struggle has centre stage, at least for any action within most of Burma..............

II. "Speaking with Author of The Jasmine or the Moon"_ Interview with Thierry Falise by Raluca Enescu

_ In 1996 I interviewed and photographed Aung San Suu Kyi in her Rangoon house for a French magazine. It was not a scoop (at that time many journalists and other people were able to visit her) but it was a very interesting interview and a good photo session during which she showed patience and a great sense of humour. For technical reasons, I could not use all the Aung San Suu Kyi’s quotes at that time. I use some of them in the book. And meeting her personally was of course worth reading a thousand stories about her... ...........

III. "Courage under fire"_ Commentary: May K Ng

_  The courage, conviction and determination of the Burmese people have been under fire for as long as they can remember, but now, it no longer can be hidden from the world. Many may ask, ‘why and what motivates the people to continue to resist the military oppression in Burma?’ It might be because, they believe that, no matter what their personal sacrifices are, ‘the cause’ to bring democracy and peace to Burma’ is just and is worth fighting for...............

IV. "Unless We Are United for a Revolution" _ Commentary: Min Khin Kyaw

_ Democratic leaders must make sure how the future conditions of every ethnic people will be and how they will be able to determine their affairs with dignity and confidence. Here all must come together for a draft agreement how we want our future together and how we can fight for it, maintain it and improve it. .........

V. "Final Assault for our Revolution"_ Commentary: Dr. San Oo Aung

_ We need to prepare for a revolution. We need to consider the Tactics and Strategies for revolution. We must plan for the final push, knockout strike or lethal last assault to topple military regime. We need the multi pronged attack from various sides with different strategies. All possible methods should be considered for our revolution............

VI. "Armed Struggle is a Last Resort"_ Opinion: Terry Evans

_ Talented artists around the world stand up and give their support for freedom and democracy in a manner that no dictator’s propagandists can match.......They empower people to transform personal stories of abuse into powerful tools for justice, promoting public engagement and policy change..........

II. "Speaking with a Hero of Shan People"_ Interview with Sao Yawd Serk

_ One day, seven friends of mine and I went to school, we ran into a group of Burmese soldiers. The soldiers dragged away my female friend who was only 14 years old. They raped her but we could not save her from the Burmese soldiers; we had to ask for assistance from our schoolmates. .......when I was 16 years old, I was forced to be a porter, I was told to take care of recruited horses...........

III. "Who wants to be a Millionaire?"_ Candid Commentary: Dr. Tayza

_  Junta Generals  sitting on huge natural-gas reserves in Burma’s off-shore gas-fields, are not reluctant to spend a few million dollars to buy some intellectuals, writers, artists and even former diplomats from around the world; to get their services as junta’s unofficial envoys, to defend junta’s bad human-rights records, to de-rail international efforts to democratize Burma, and to promote twisted pervert ideas about the virtues of doing business with junta in stead of putting pressure on it for democratic reforms.............

IV. "Show Karen One Kyat, Burman One Kyat, Rightaway" _ Commentary: David Tharckabaw

_ Of course, by Karen one Kyat, Burman one Kyat, the Karen did not mean absolute equalitarianism. Equality is to be according to need and ability. If there are ten Burmans and five Karens, the Burmans as a group would get ten Kyats and the Karen would get five Kyats. If a Karen tilled ten acres and a Burman tilled five acres, the Karen would enjoy twice the benefits the Burman enjoy..........

V. "Artists on the move for Burma"_ Opinion: Raluca Enescu

_ By them lending their voices to the movement for human rights in Burma, their fans have learned that somewhere, in a country they maybe didn’t know much about before, there are people who are being denied their basic liberties and who need their help............

VI. "Arts Moves Hearts and Minds"_ Opinion: Dr. San Oo Aung

_ to mobilize the people, we need to know that the people tend to decide with their hearts....... If we can move the heart and minds of the people, we may be able to mobilize the masses for our ultimate people power movement to topple military rule in Burma..............

VII. "The Last Resort Is Overdue Now"_ Commentary: Hkun Hom

_ Against this backdrop of Than Shwe's heavy handed tactics and theft of Ethnic States National treasures, there is no alternative but “THE LAST RESORT IS NOW OVER DUE”. It would be very unwise to wait any longer...........

IX. "High Inflation - the silent killer" _ BURMA DIGEST Extra: Dr. Bhaskar Dasgupta
