Public Health Activities in Mae-Tao Clinic

Mae Tao Clinic on Thai-Burma border, founded by Dr. Cynthia Maung, a nominee of Nobel Peace Award and winner of many prestigious awards for her humanitarian activities, has been providing very excellent health care for ethnic people, refugees and IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) from Eastern part of Burma.

Military regime frequently and regularly launch ethnic cleansing operations on ethnic minority people of Burma. And ethnic people have to flee their homes and hide in jungles. For such poor displaced people hiding in the jungle, Dr. Cynthia's Mae Tao clinic and the associated Backpack Health Workers are the only hope for getting any healthcare.

As Mae Tao Clinic's activities to provide health-care to displaced people along Thai-Burma border become very successful, military regime regard Mae Tao Clinic as an obstacle in their quest for elimination of all ethnic minority groups in Burma. So, although Mae Tao Clinic as a health-care facility must be immune from any military action according to international conventions, Burmese army sometimes launched fatal attacks on Mae Tao clinic and also try to kidnap and kill Mae Tao Clinic's health workers.
